How to restart sound in macOS using the Terminal was one of those things I have been curious for a while. Yesterday one of my clients called me regarding their sound in one of their macs. They could not reboot at the moment. So, after brewing a nice cup of Catimor coffee variety at home I decided to check this one out.

I had remote access to the mac using ssh. So, I discovered the command to restart sound in macOS using the Terminal. Always make sure that any command that you run doesn’t kill your current SSH connection.

The command is:

sudo killall coreaudiod

You will be asked for your admin password. The coreaudiod process will then be terminated and automatically restarted, which should fix any temporary problems with your macOS sound. If the sound issue persists after trying this, you may need to restart your Mac.
